What is Reflexology?

footsteps towards tranquility reflexology

A poll of clients has described reflexology as ‘ a relaxing, calming, de-stressing, self healing therapy of the feet or hands’.

Reflexology is a non-intrusive holistic therapy that can be traced back to ancient Egyptian times. It has developed through the ages with experience and research to become what it is today. Current techniques are based on the work of Dr William Fitzgerald and Eunice Ingham.

Fitzgerald developed Zone Therapy where the body is divided into 10 zones which run the length of the body. Working one part of the zone can influence an area in another part of the same zone. Eunice Ingham then mapped the bodies organs onto the feet following the zones and thus producing the first foot-map of the body. It is this which is used in reflexology to plan treatment for each individual client, making treatment holistic and personal.

Reflexology uses a gentle alternating pressure on the zones or reflexes of the feet or hands which will encourage the flow of energy to the corresponding body part. This gradually helps to restore homoeostasis (balance) and stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself, physically and emotionally. This encourages a natural energy rebalancing promoting relaxation and allowing self-healing to begin. The following diagram shows the associations between the foot reflexes and the body.

What can Reflexology do?

Reflexology can assist with a variety of conditions and if you have been injured or fatigued it can help to restore balance promoting the body to heal itself. It can also help with:

  • Relaxation
  • Sleep management
  • Pain Management
  • Stress relief
  • Natural Healing

What Reflexology cannot do?

Reflexology cannot heal, cure, replace conventional medicine, or diagnose conditions. However it will work alongside and complement traditional treatment to help support and aid self healing.

Footsteps Towards Tranquility Reflexology

Treatments last approximately 1 hour and can include Hand or Foot Reflexology.

The session will begin by some relaxing foot massage to help you relax and follow by the reflexology treatment. Once the treatment is complete I will go through any findings with you and share any general advice. It is then advisable to take it easy for the rest of the day, avoid heavy meals, strenuous exercise, alcohol and drink plenty of water. Sometimes Reflexology can induce what is known as  “a mini healing crisis” which is common with all complimentary therapies. It may make you feel a little under the weather and achy but is just your body working to flush out toxins. Taking it easy for the rest of the day and drinking plenty of water will help. More can be found about this on our FAQ page.
